Unreal Tournament 2004 goes gold

Atari and Epic Games have today announced that Unreal Tournament 2004 has gone gold. The game, which is the third installment in the Unreal Tournament first-person shooter series, is expected to arrive in stores worldwide on March 15. "Get ready, PC gamers, because the biggest thing to ever hit multiplayer gaming is about to land on your hard drives,” said Peter Wyse, executive producer at Atari. "The granddaddy of all multiplayer competitions is back and better than ever! The extra time was worth the wait. Epic has produced the biggest, baddest, and most exciting multiplayer title ever to grace the PC."

Wow, must have taken some time to dig this thread out of oblivion. Since it's here though, I too miss the days of UT2k4. Sadly since those days everything has gone down hill

LOL I came on here, looked at the Page News Title and thought "Hmm, I haven't been in here for a while." Browsed back a bit to see what cob web stories laid around, and here was UT2k4.

What funny is I find myself reminiscing the UT glory days same way I hear older folks reminisce about such things like when gas was super cheap, or when there we no troopers in certain parts of the highway, or when you could say goodbye to your family at the boarding gate in the airport, or when sleeping pillows used to be free on the flight. How about a decent in-flight meal?

I now find myself doing the same thing my elders do. Reminisce. And why not? Those were some really great years that are no longer alive. Times change. Some for the better, and some for the worse. I'll tell you what. I will give up my iPhone, my LCD TV, my Blu-Ray movies, and I'll even give up my 20Mb Comcast connection for my old 6Mb DSL if you give me back UT2k4 and the amazing following it had while it was still fresh.

I loved the original (UT99), had at least 20+ gig of maps LOL I could run and snipe better than most people could play, period (got accused of cheating no end of times).

Unfortunately I left my copies of UT and collectors edition 2k4 (along with most of my games) in the UK when I moved to the US I think my mom gave them to a charity shop.

Believe me, you are not the only one.

Yeah, I open the pretty little tin box every once in a while, and I think about a little bit of common sense, a few weeks of consulting with the fan base, and few more days of programming could have put this game on the same pedestal as 2k4 was.

There was actually a team making an onslaught mode for it, but it was too little too late. The damage had been done.

I mean come on, to release a product with something as simple as having a functional power meter on the Bender not working? I had Dawn fully ported over, and I would have done what ever it took to get the others in. I mean Dria, such an amazing map not even duplicated. Yeah, I should really just stop right here lol.

Ok time to go play some 2k4.

So did UT3 ever not suck? I only ever played like 5 minutes of it. I'm just not sure why I didn't like it. On paper it seemed like such a good idea. The engine is gorgeous. They made my favorite shock combo viable again. Obviously the UI was shit. Plugins and modding were what made UT great though. I don't know if the community ever fixed the damn thing.

UT3 always sucked. When you choose to focus the game for the console market using a game engine that uses a 4 color palette (grey, black, brown and white), dumbed down controls, UI, AI and a ton of stuff broken or missing ... then you have a recipe for disaster. Now you know why they never made another Unreal Tournament.

Well, according to Epic, they haven't made another one because they simply don't know where to go with it. If they're innovative, it's not a UT game, and if they rehash they old, well, a lot of people just don't want to play it.

They're happy just to print money by building Unreal Engine 4 and licensing it to all the happy developers. Or to work on games where there's a winning chance.

Also unfortunate is that I don't think UT3 was a commercial failure. Sure, they lost a lot of fans, and you of course. But the game reviewers 'loved' it and it sold quite well, if on name alone. I wonder if Epic really *heard* any of the complaints, or thought 'job well done' on that one.

If UT were to sail in any currently successful direction, I suppose one option would have to be TF2. The whole micropayments, rewards thing. Maybe with a mix of CoD leveling built in. Everyone wants to show off now. I think there's certainly room for some UT2014 with some added junk to please the masses.

Ah well.

UT2014:

Liandri Mining Corporation credits:
$1.99 = 50 credits
$4.99 = 250 credits
$9.99 - 2000 credits
$49.99 = 50,000 credits
$99.99 = 200,000 credits

What can you buy with your new credits?

Toilet mobile = 300 credits
Mr Crow skin = 6000 credits
Double Jump = 15,000 credits
Numb down your mini gun so you can be a real hit scan weapons experts = you can't afford that

Yeah maybe UT is better left dead so we can at least have a great memory of it.

Yeah they tarnished the memory of Unreal Tournament with UT2007 (UT3 for the console kiddies). It's probably for the best it be left alone.

Not completely accurate, mainly BS from a dev with no real answer. UT2k4 was basically the original UT brought up to date graphically and a load of new game mods added for good measure. Look how well it did, UT2k4 is the best in the series. All they'd have to do is the same. Make an up to date UT game with all the game modes (and a lot of the old maps) and maybe try to be innovative with some other game modes ... and importantly focus on the PC development with no constraints regarding mods, controllers and system abilities. That would be a game all the UT fans would get behind.
